Our Approach to Oxford HAT Test Tutoring

Success in the History Aptitude Test (HAT) is vital for applicants to Oxford for History and related courses. With more than 20 years’ experience preparing students for the HAT, our tutors can significantly increase your chances of admission.

The HAT requires students to analyse a primary source and write a single hour-long essay about it. As the sources are designed to be about unfamiliar historical subjects, simply memorising facts won’t help. Good HAT preparation requires mastering source analysis and creating compelling arguments under time constraints.

Our HAT tutors are Oxbridge graduates who know exactly what it takes to succeed. They start by assessing your current abilities to pinpoint strengths and areas for development. This personalised approach helps us design a study plan that aligns with your learning style and goals. With plenty of past paper practice and comprehensive feedback, you’ll learn the exam techniques needed to score highly.

FAQs

The History Aptitude Test (HAT) is an admissions test for applicants to History and related undergraduate courses at the University of Oxford. It assesses analytical and critical thinking skills.

Applicants to undergraduate History and joint History courses at Oxford, such as History and Politics, are required to take the HAT.

The HAT consists of one essay question based on the interpretation of a historical source. The source is designed to relate to an unfamiliar historical subject. You will have one hour to write your essay. The test assesses your ability to analyse and argue effectively.

We recommend starting preparation several months before the test. This gives you time to develop the necessary analytical and writing skills, practise with plenty of past papers, and pick up the exam technique needed to score highly.

Yes, our HAT tutoring is available both online and in person in London, offering flexibility to fit your schedule.

Simply contact us to schedule a free consultation. We’ll discuss your History application and your preparation for the HAT. Following this, we’ll match you with a tutor who suits your needs and goals.
