Keith, GCSE, A Level and IB French and Russian tutor, and GCSE Spanish tutor at Dukes Plus

I am an experienced A Level French tutor with ten years of teaching experience in academically rigorous international schools. I spent six of those years as a Head of Department and have taught French across the A Level, IBDP, GCSE and iGCSE curricula. I completed my PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status at King’s College London. I hold a BA in French and Russian from Oxford, and a PhD and an MLitt in Russian Literature from the St Andrews. I support A Level French students across every area of the course, including speaking, listening, reading, translation, essay writing and grammatical analysis. I can also help students study French-language literature, film and wider cultural topics, while developing the analytical skills required for strong examination responses. I believe that interaction should be at the heart of language lessons. I have completed professional development in gamification and use varied activities to make lessons engaging and intellectually stimulating. I also incorporate authentic cultural material wherever possible so that students can understand the language within a meaningful, real-world context. My teaching combines extensive structured practice with careful grammatical analysis. I believe that students achieve the greatest linguistic success when they have regular opportunities to apply the language while also developing a clear understanding of how it works. My experience of teaching small classes has prepared me well for one-to-one tuition. My previous school began as a tutoring college, and its emphasis on personalised teaching has strongly influenced my own pedagogical approach. In addition to French, I teach Russian at GCSE, A Level and IBDP, as well as Spanish at GCSE and iGCSE.

Rachelle, French, German, EAL, and 11+ tutor at Dukes Plus

I am an experienced A Level French tutor with more than twenty years of teaching and tutoring experience. I hold a BA in French and German from the University of Manchester. I support A Level French students in developing greater fluency, accuracy and confidence across all areas of the course. This includes speaking, listening, reading, translation, grammar and writing. I also help students strengthen the analytical and communication skills they need to respond clearly and effectively in examinations. I believe that learning should be engaging and enjoyable. I place great importance on getting to know each student so that I can understand what motivates them, what they find challenging and how they learn most effectively. There are many ways to teach the same concept, and I see it as my role to adapt my approach so that lessons are both purposeful and stimulating. I aim to create a welcoming and judgement-free environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, attempting unfamiliar tasks and making mistakes. Building confidence is a central part of my teaching. I help students overcome barriers to learning by showing them that mistakes are a necessary part of progress and by gradually stretching their abilities in a supportive way. I encourage students to explain their thought processes when answering questions. This allows me to identify misconceptions, deepen their understanding and create meaningful discussion around their learning. I find it especially rewarding to see students grow in confidence, improve their ability and approach future challenges with a stronger sense of self-belief. I began tutoring ESOL, French, and German in 2005. I later became a professional ESOL teacher in 2011 and have since taught learners of all ages from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. I have taught in both the UK and Germany and have also worked in educational content creation. While working at a language school in Cologne, I served as Head of Teacher Training and Quality Assurance. I also qualified as an examiner for TOEIC, TOEIC Bridge, TOEFL ITP, TFI and WiDaF. In addition, I have written examination preparation materials for TOEIC and Cambridge English qualifications and have extensive experience preparing students for IELTS.

Can a Tutor Help with A Level French?

Many students find the jump from GCSE to A Level French challenging. The expectations of their knowledge of vocab and grammar become much more demanding, while they are required to improvise accurate, insightful spoken French in response to difficult unseen questions. And that’s to say nothing of the literary and film analysis required for the first time at A Level.

A good tutor can make a real difference. Working one-to-one means lessons can zero in on exactly what your child needs, whether that’s mastering the subjunctive, building a wider bank of idiomatic vocabulary, structuring a persuasive essay, or preparing thoughtful responses on set texts. A tutor can also provide regular, low-pressure oral practice, which is often the area students feel least confident about but which carries significant weight in the final grade.

Beyond subject knowledge, our fully managed tuition provides structure and accountability. With all A Level tutoring managed and overseen by our dedicated Head of Secondary Tuition, we ensure that each child keeps up their progress. For students aiming for the top grades, a tutor experienced with their specific exam board can also offer invaluable insight into the exam technique needed to score high.

At Dukes Plus, our A Level French tutors combine language expertise with a deep understanding of the exam requirements, helping students build all the skills they need to excel.
