English GCSE Tutors

I am an experienced English tutor and teacher with eight years of experience working in a range of international educational settings. Most recently, I served as Head of English at a leading international school, where I developed an engaging, accessible approach that helps students build confidence and achieve their academic goals. I hold a PGCE in Secondary English from the University of Plymouth, a Postgraduate Diploma in English Literature from the Open University, and a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Sociology from the University of Exeter. I am passionate about English and committed to helping every student improve their results, recognise their potential, and develop a genuine enjoyment of the subject. I have extensive experience teaching GCSE English Language and English Literature, supporting students across a wide range of abilities and learning needs. I help pupils strengthen their analytical writing, comprehension, creative and transactional writing, and exam technique, while developing the confidence to respond independently to unfamiliar texts and challenging questions. My experience includes working with students who require SEN or EAL support, enabling me to adapt lessons carefully and provide clear, structured guidance. I also support students preparing for school entrance examinations. Alongside my GCSE tutoring, I have taught English Language and Literature at A Level and within the IB curriculum. I have also worked as a sixth-form tutor, helping students prepare for university and navigate the application process.

I am an experienced English tutor, teacher and former Head of English with nearly 20 years’ experience in education. I have also spent more than a decade working at managerial and directorial level in international schools, giving me a strong understanding of the academic standards, curriculum demands and pastoral support students need to succeed. I hold a PGCE in Secondary English and Drama from Durham University, a Certificate in TESOL from Inlingua Cheltenham, and a BA (Hons) in English from Aberystwyth University. Whatever a student’s goals or challenges, I am committed to helping them reach their full potential, both in and beyond the classroom. I have extensive experience teaching GCSE English Language and English Literature, helping students develop the core skills required for strong examination performance. My teaching covers analytical reading, essay structure, creative and transactional writing, comparison skills, textual interpretation and effective exam technique. I work closely with each student to identify gaps in their knowledge, strengthen their written expression and build the confidence to approach demanding questions independently. As a former Head of English, I understand how GCSE students are assessed and what distinguishes a secure response from a high-level one. I provide clear, thoughtful guidance while encouraging students to develop their own ideas and individual voice. My approach is holistic and student-centred, with equal emphasis on academic progress, confidence and enjoyment of the subject. Alongside GCSE tuition, I teach English Literature up to A Level and support students preparing for 13+ entrance examinations. I have worked with a diverse range of learners and can adapt my teaching to suit different abilities, learning styles and educational backgrounds. My TESOL qualification also supports my work with students for whom English is an additional language.

I am an English teacher with more than twenty years of teaching and tutoring experience, mainly within the private sector. I specialise in supporting students with GCSE English Language and English Literature, including preparation for AQA examinations. My teaching approach is structured and traditional. I use worksheets, practice books and past exam papers to help students build their knowledge, consolidate key skills, and become familiar with the demands of GCSE. I provide targeted revision tasks to address areas for improvement and help students work towards increasing their overall grades. I support students with reading, writing, vocabulary and examination technique. To develop their language skills, I encourage them to use dictionaries and create personal vocabulary notebooks. I also help students draw on their own interests when completing creative writing tasks. This gives them greater autonomy over their learning and helps them write more confidently. I believe that every student is unique and learns differently. I adapt my approach to meet each learner’s individual needs while maintaining clear boundaries and a positive working relationship. I describe myself as a professional, calm and friendly educator, and I enjoy helping students develop their knowledge and reach their full potential. I also tutor English across Key Stages 1 to 3 as well as English as a Foreign Language. In addition, I tutor for the 7+ and 11+, as well as Art History up to GCSE level. I hold a Cambridge English Teaching Certificate, CELTA, from the University of Cambridge and a BA (Hons) in Art and Education Studies from the University of Surrey.

I am a highly experienced tutor and have been teaching for many years. My subject specialisms are English, Latin and Greek, and I have an abiding love for language and literature.

I have tutored privately for the last 4 years for A Levels and GCSEs, and I also teach at Foundation and Master’s level which enables me to prepare younger students more efficiently for their next steps in their academic life.

I teach English from 11+ to GCSE level. I also tutor verbal reasoning for entrance exams. I am passionate about the difference 1-1 tuition can make and I see the effects every year in my students’ results.
