What Is the 7 Plus?
The 7 Plus is an entrance exam used by many independent schools to assess children for admission into Year 3. Usually taken by children in the autumn or spring terms of Year 2, the 7 Plus focuses on Maths and English. Its purpose is to identify a child’s academic potential, problem-solving abilities, and readiness for the step up to prep school.
Typically, the 7 Plus exam includes written assessments and sometimes an interview. The English section focuses on the basics of spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as comprehension and creative writing. The Maths paper tests arithmetic and, especially for more competitive schools, multi-step problem-solving.
While the format varies between schools, the overarching goal remains the same: to ensure that any children offered a place will be able to thrive in the new school’s academic environment.

While meeting a tutor in person can sometimes help a child settle in more quickly, our experience shows no meaningful difference in outcomes between online and in-person tuition.
