What Is Included in the GCSE Music Syllabus?

The GCSE Music syllabus is designed to give students a comprehensive foundation in the theoretical and practical components of music. Although the curriculum varies by exam board, the syllabus usually consists of three key areas that are assessed.

Firstly, students are required to perform music, as a soloist, as part of an ensemble, or sometimes both. These performances demonstrate their technical skills, musical expression, and confidence. Our tutors work closely with students to refine their abilities and ensure they excel in this aspect of the syllabus.

Secondly, in the composition component of the syllabus, students must compose original musical pieces. Typically, they must write one ‘free’ composition in a style of their choice, while the other must follow a set brief provided by the exam board. This component allows creativity to flourish, and our tutors provide expert guidance to help students craft well-structured, expressive works that meet exam requirements.

The third area, sometimes called ‘music theory’ or ‘listening and appraising’, focuses on developing students’ ability to analyse and understand a wide range of musical styles. The syllabus features a number of musical traditions, including Western classical, popular music, and world music. Students learn to identify key features such as melody, rhythm, harmony, and structure, building a deeper appreciation of music and its context.
