Ro holds a BA and MSc in Natural Sciences from Cambridge. They specialise in preparing students for the ESAT with a particular focus on Biology. Since then, Ro has worked as a tutor, teacher and professional revision-resource designer, covering A-Level Chemistry and Biology alongside a broad range of GCSE maths and science subjects. Their undergraduate specialisms in neurobiology and physiology continue to shape their teaching, and they particularly enjoy exploring neuroanatomy, consciousness and interventions in the brain with students of all levels. Ro also holds a master’s degree in the History of Medicine, drawing on both their subject knowledge and creative approach to bring the rich history of biological ideas into their sessions. In addition, they completed a Graduate Diploma in Law as a Queen Mother’s Scholar at Middle Temple, receiving a full scholarship for their studies.

Sol holds an MEng from Oxford. He has been tutoring for more than six years and has extensive experience as an ESAT tutor. Sol is a qualified tutor and demonstrator at a Russell Group university. He has also spent three years working on summer schools in Oxford, including with UNIQ, the University of Oxford’s access programme. In this role, Sol supported students throughout the admissions process by leading interview workshops and admissions-test preparation sessions, as well as offering guidance on personal statements. He also helped to run laboratory sessions and departmental visits, and tutored students using the kinds of problem sheets typically encountered in first-year engineering tutorials. While studying at Oxford, Sol rowed in his college’s first boat, trained with the University’s Blues triathlon squad and served as Vice-President of the Oxford Climate Society.

Ana holds a first-class MSc in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University. She has tutored Oxbridge applicants for Dukes Plus for five years. Ana specialises in organic and supramolecular chemistry. During her degree, she completed several research projects in these areas and held roles across a number of university societies, including the CAMbassadors outreach scheme, the Cambridge Romanian Society and the Cambridge Environmental Consulting Society. Ana is currently pursuing a PhD in Computational and Experimental Supramolecular Chemistry at University College London. Her research focuses on the solid-state behaviour of coordination-based metal–organic clusters. She has also completed a placement with Orbital Materials, a start-up where she applied computational methods and machine learning to the discovery of next-generation materials. Alongside her research, Ana works as a teaching assistant on first-year undergraduate courses at UCL and has recently joined the British Chemistry Olympiad Working Group.

Amber studied Biochemistry at Oxford. She has successfully prepared many students applying to Oxford for science subjects. During her studies, she completed a laboratory placement at the University of British Columbia, where she investigated how deficiencies in insulin-like peptides affect longevity in Drosophila melanogaster. Her master’s research explored the genetic basis of sexual behaviour in Drosophila, while her optional modules allowed her to specialise further in virology and immunology. After graduating, she spent a year working as a business analyst in London before returning to Oxford in 2019 to begin her PhD. Her doctoral research examines the development and evolution of Drosophila, with a particular focus on gene regulatory networks.

Case Study

Every package is unique to each student: your abilities, your timeline, and your tutor. Here is an example of how a package is put together for one applicant.

Malcolm is applying for Engineering at Cambridge and needs to take the ESAT. He books a 12-hour package of ESAT tutoring with eight weeks to go before the test.

Here is how his lessons work:

Lesson 1: in the first session, Malcolm’s tutor, a Cambridge Engineering graduate, assesses his strengths and weaknesses across the Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics modules of the ESAT. The assessment shows that Malcolm is losing marks on areas such as algebraic manipulation under time pressure and multi-step mechanics questions. This enables the tutor to produce a bespoke tutoring plan for the remainder of Malcolm’s package.

Lessons 2-4: Malcom’s ESAT tutor targets his weakest topics. Together, they work through the problem types he is most susceptible to dropping marks on. The tutor sets Malcolm papers from our library of mock exams as homework to complete between sessions.

Lessons 5-8: Malcolm and his tutor review the mocks he has completed between lessons. The tutor analyses his performance and offers detailed feedback after each practice. He finds that while Malcolm’s knowledge has improved in his weaker areas, he is still making avoidable mistakes due to calculation errors and poor time management. Over time, Malcom’s tutor tracks his improvement and adjusts the focus of the lessons where necessary.

Lessons 9-12: The final stretch of lessons are all about fine-tuning. Malcolm’s scores in his mock exams have significantly improved, so now the focus is on time management, exam technique, and addressing the higher-level questions he needed to maximise his score.

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is used by Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, and Imperial College London to assess applicants for a range of Science and Engineering courses. Applicants must take a compulsory Maths module, as well as two more modules from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, depending on the course they are applying for.

For 2027 entry, the ESAT is currently required by the following universities and courses:

    • University of Cambridge: Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine.
  • Imperial College London: Physics and all undergraduate Engineering disciplines.
  • University of Oxford: Physics and Physics and Philosophy.
  • University College London (UCL): BEng and MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering
  • Always check the latest requirements for your chosen course and university before applying.
