What are the different university admissions tests?

UK university admissions tests are specialised assessments used by various universities across the United Kingdom to evaluate the aptitude, skills, and knowledge of applicants for specific courses or subject areas. Admissions tests are a crucial part of the selection process for many top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, ensuring that candidates possess the required abilities for success in their chosen field of study.

The LNAT (Law National Admissions Test) is a standardised test used by certain UK universities to admit students into their law programmes. It assesses reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and critical thinking skills, key attributes for legal studies. Universities like Oxford, UCL, and King’s College London require LNAT, making it an essential component of the admissions process for aspiring law students.

For prospective medical and dental students, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) evaluates mental abilities and behavioural attributes necessary for clinical practice. The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is used by the Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London to assess candidates for entry to courses in Engineering, Science, and related fields. Candidates take a combination of its Maths and Science modules, depending on the course they are applying for.

The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) is used by Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London to assess applicants for entry to courses including Computer Science, Economics, and Mathematics.

The Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) are a Maths assessment taken at the end of Year 13 for students who have a conditional offer to study Maths at the University of Cambridge. It is also sometimes required by the University of Warwick. STEP is widely considered to be the most challenging university entrance Maths assessment, as it is more demanding than the TMUA or MAT.

The Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions (TARA) is an admissions test used by UCL and Oxford for entry to various courses, particularly in the social sciences. Assessing critical thinking and reasoning, it is somewhat similar to the TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment), which was formerly used by Oxford.
