Admissions Tests

What are the different university admissions tests?

UK university admissions tests are specialised assessments used by various universities across the United Kingdom to evaluate the aptitude, skills, and knowledge of applicants for specific courses or subject areas. Admissions tests are a crucial part of the selection process for many top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, ensuring that candidates possess the required abilities for success in their chosen field of study.

The LNAT (Law National Admissions Test) is a standardised test used by certain UK universities to admit students into their law programmes. It assesses reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and critical thinking skills, key attributes for legal studies. Universities like Oxford, UCL, and King’s College London require LNAT, making it an essential component of the admissions process for aspiring law students.

For prospective medical and dental students, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) evaluates mental abilities and behavioural attributes necessary for clinical practice. It is now used by all universities and medical schools, including Oxford and Cambridge, to identify candidates who demonstrate the essential skills and attitudes for their medical and dental programs.

Required by Oxford for Classics and related courses, the CAT (Classics Admissions Test) evaluates linguistic and analytical abilities. The test ensures that students have the skills required for studying ancient languages and cultures, distinguishing them for rigorous academic pursuits in this field.

The TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment) is used by the University of Oxford to assess problem-solving and critical thinking skills for various undergraduate courses. It ensures that candidates have strong analytical abilities, making it a vital part of the admissions process for courses that demand higher-order thinking. It is required for applicants to popular courses like Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and Economics and Management.

Used by Oxford for History and related courses, the HAT (History Aptitude Test) assesses the ability to analyse historical material and make substantiated judgments. It is a critical factor in admissions to ensure candidates have the necessary skills to excel in historical studies.

If you’re preparing for the HAT, why not try our HAT practice test?

The Modern Languages Admission Test (MLAT) is an assessment used by the University of Oxford for evaluating prospective students seeking admission to their modern languages programs. This comprehensive test assesses candidates’ language skills, including their proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in their chosen modern language(s). Additionally, the MLAT evaluates candidates’ analytical and critical thinking abilities, as they relate to the study of languages and cultures. Success in the MLAT is a significant factor in securing a place in Oxford’s modern languages courses, making it an essential step for aspiring linguists and scholars aiming to join this prestigious academic institution.

The Philosophy Admission Test (PhilAT), often referred to as the “Philosophy Test,” is an assessment conducted by the University of Oxford as part of its rigorous admissions process for aspiring philosophers. This challenging examination is designed to gauge candidates’ aptitude for philosophical thinking, their analytical reasoning abilities, and their grasp of foundational philosophical concepts. Prospective students who excel in the Philosophy Test demonstrate their readiness to engage in profound philosophical inquiries and discussions within the esteemed halls of Oxford, fostering an environment of intellectual curiosity and scholarly excellence.

The MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test) is used by Oxford and Imperial College London to assess mathematical understanding and logical reasoning for Mathematics applicants. It is also used by Oxford for Computer Science (but not Imperial). Encouraged by other universities, such as Warwick. It ensures that students have the mathematical aptitude required for highly specialised mathematics & computer programs.

Oxford’s PAT (Physics Admissions Test) evaluates problem-solving skills and physical and mathematical understanding for

Physics, Engineering Science, and Materials Science applicants. It identifies candidates with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, essential for success in these technical fields.

If you’re getting ready to take the Physics Admissions Test, why not take our PAT practice test?

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is used by the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London to assess candidates for entry to courses in Engineering, Science, and related fields. Candidates take a combination of its Maths and Science modules, depending on the course they are applying for. The ESAT replaced the NSAA and ENGAA in 2024.

The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) is an essential assessment designed by the University of Cambridge to evaluate a student’s mathematical aptitude and readiness for higher education. This rigorous examination goes beyond the conventional curriculum and seeks to assess problem-solving abilities, mathematical reasoning, and creative thinking. TMUA provides aspiring Cambridge students with an opportunity to showcase their mathematical skills, making it an integral part of the admissions process. It challenges candidates to tackle complex mathematical problems, demonstrating their potential to excel in mathematics at the university level. Aspiring mathematicians and scientists should consider taking the TMUA to demonstrate their readiness for the academic rigours of Cambridge University.

The Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) are a Maths assessment taken at the end of Year 13 for students who have a conditional offer to study Maths at the University of Cambridge. It is also sometimes required by the University of Warwick. STEP is widely considered to be the most challenging university entrance Maths assessment, as it is more demanding than the TMUA or MAT.

Candidates for Biomedical Sciences must sit the Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test (BMSAT), an 80-question, 90-minute computer-based admissions test focusing on GCSE-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. The BMSAT was introduced in 2024.

The Ancient History and Classical Archaeology Admissions Test (AHCAAT) is an admissions test for Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Oxford. It assesses candidates’ abilities to critique academic arguments and analyse material evidence from the ancient world. The AHCAAT comprises two equally weighted essay questions, focusing on textual and visual analysis, completed in 90 minutes. It was introduced in 2024.
