Immediately after each 30-minute interview, your interviewer will deliver 15 minutes of verbal feedback on your performance. This covers your academic strengths and areas for improvement, as well as your interview technique.

Alison read Mathematics and Philosophy at Oxford. She has worked as a tutor for Dukes Plus since 2012 and is Director of Dukes Plus Consultancy. A graduate of Pembroke College, Oxford, with a degree in Maths and Philosophy, she works primarily with STEM applicants, helping them navigate an admissions landscape that has become significantly more competitive – with applicant numbers for many courses rising by around 50% over the past decade. Committed to widening access to higher education and helping students develop confidence in their academic identity, Alison is currently supporting her 13th cohort of university applicants. She has previously led teams at Oxbridge Applications and A-List Education. Her academic interests include formal logic, the philosophy of mathematics, and abstract algebra. Alison also holds an MBA and is an Independent Governor at her former college.

What are Cambridge Maths interviews like?
Cambridge Mathematics interviews usually take place in early to mid-December. Depending on the College, they can be held in person in Cambridge or online, and the exact format varies: applicants may have one longer interview or multiple shorter interviews. A typical individual Maths interview lasts around 20–40 minutes, although Colleges set their own arrangements.
The interview itself is overwhelmingly mathematical. Applicants work through problems with their interviewers, often on topics such as sequences, integrals, graph sketching, probability or mechanics. Questions are designed to develop as the conversation progresses: interviewers give hints, introduce new ideas and ask follow-up questions to see how the applicant responds.
Cambridge is primarily assessing mathematical potential, rather than simply counting how many questions an applicant gets right. Interviewers are interested in how candidates think logically, connect mathematical ideas, absorb unfamiliar concepts, explore different approaches and use guidance when they get stuck. The reasoning process – including how an applicant responds to a hint – can therefore matter as much as reaching the final answer.
Our Cambridge Maths mock interview packages are designed to recreate this experience as closely as possible. Interviews are delivered by Oxbridge graduates and shaped by our in-depth research into the Cambridge admissions process, including lists of questions asked in real Cambridge Maths interviews which we update every year. The result is realistic practice for both the mathematics itself and the experience of working through challenging problems aloud under interview conditions.
How Do Our Mock Interviews Work?
This example package shows how our Oxbridge interview support can be used to provide comprehensive preparation for a candidate’s interview.
Example Package
Sophie is preparing for her Mathematics interview at Cambridge. With two and a half weeks to go, she spreads her Oxbridge interview tutoring across this period. Below is an example of the types of interviewers she might meet:
Interview One – Daniel. A Cambridge Mathematics graduate, Daniel focuses on graph sketching. He gives Sophie an unfamiliar function to sketch, then introduces a parameter and asks her to determine how changing it affects the shape and number of turning points. He presses her to justify each observation aloud rather than relying on calculation alone.
Interview Two – Priya. An Oxford Mathematics graduate, Priya works through a problem on sequences and recurrence relations. Once Sophie establishes the initial result, Priya changes one of the conditions and asks her to determine whether the same argument still holds.
Interview Three – James. A Cambridge Engineering graduate, James takes a more applied approach. He gives Sophie a mechanics problem in which she has to construct the mathematical model herself, before using calculus to optimise a quantity within it.
Interview Four – Maya. A Cambridge Mathematics graduate, Maya runs an extended, supervision-style problem-solving interview. She begins with a problem involving polynomial roots, then develops it through a series of follow-up questions, testing how Sophie uses hints, examines special cases and turns an initial observation into a rigorous argument.

Our Cambridge Maths mock interviews are conducted online by Oxbridge-graduate tutors specialising in Maths.
Each interview will last approximately 30 minutes (the same as a typical Cambridge interview) and consist of realistic questions based on those used in past Oxbridge interviews.
Following your interview, your interviewer will provide you with 15 minutes of instant verbal feedback. Then, after the session, they will send you a detailed written assessment of your performance.
All our mock interviews are delivered by Oxbridge-graduate tutors with extensive experience preparing students for their interviews. For Cambridge Maths, your mock interviewers will be graduates of Maths or a closely related subject (like Physics or Engineering) at Oxford or Cambridge.
Each interview is usually conducted by a different tutor to provide you with a rounded view on your performance, strengths, and weaknesses.

All our mock interviews take place online, via video call. This is how all interviews are conducted at Oxford, and most at Cambridge.
Cambridge recommend practising with STEP problems as these are similar to the type of problem you’ll face at interview.
It’s important to get used to think out loud, rather than just working silently. Focus on explaining your reasoning clearly.
Mock interviews are particularly useful for getting comfortable with the pace and style of Cambridge questioning. They also give you the chance to show your capacity to respond to hints and try different ways to approach a problem.
Expect a problem-solving conversation rather than a test of memorised knowledge. You’ll work through mathematical questions with your interviewers, who may give hints, change the problem or ask follow-up questions to see how you think. They are interested in your reasoning, adaptability and mathematical potential, not simply whether you reach the correct answer.
