The Future City 2050 Festival — Imagining Tomorrow

The Future City 2050 Festival invites students to envision a city of the future and bring it vividly to life. Throughout the week, groups collaborate across subjects to design how the city looks, functions, and grows — from its architecture and transport systems to the science, art, and culture that shape daily life.

The week culminates in a festival where the entire school comes together — lights rise, exhibits open, and performances fill the stage. The atmosphere feels like stepping inside the world you’ve collectively imagined, celebrating creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

Govern the Future City

In this collaborative project, students form a council to decide how resources are shared in the city of 2050. Each student represents a different group — from energy providers and citizens to scientists and artists — and must negotiate a fair, balanced plan for all.

The challenge highlights conflict, compromise, and the art of diplomacy, showing how leadership and collaboration are essential to creating workable, forward-thinking solutions.

Host a Global Summit

In the second week, students step onto the international stage to take part in a mock global summit. Acting as representatives of different countries and organisations, they debate urgent global issues such as climate change, migration, and trade.

The week culminates in the signing of a treaty or agreement — the result of negotiation, persuasion, and teamwork. This project reveals how diplomacy shapes the future of every community, and how communication and cooperation drive real progress.

Understanding Global Systems
Gain a foundation in politics and international relations by exploring how nations, organisations, and communities interact on the global stage. You’ll examine the systems that shape international decision-making and discover how these structures influence societies and individuals around the world.

Developing Leadership Skills
Explore different models of leadership and practise them through interactive simulations and group challenges. You’ll learn how to guide discussions, make decisions under pressure, and understand the qualities that enable leaders to inspire trust, cooperation, and positive change.

Practising Debate and Diplomacy
Enhance your ability to communicate, persuade, and negotiate effectively. Through structured debates and model diplomatic exercises, you’ll learn how to present arguments with clarity, respond thoughtfully to opposing views, and build consensus while maintaining your perspective.

Applying Knowledge to Real Issues
Engage with real-world case studies that explore pressing global challenges — from climate change and economic inequality to conflict and international cooperation. You’ll connect theory to action, developing the insight and critical thinking needed to design meaningful, practical solutions as a future global leader.

Module 1: Politics and Governance
Explore the foundations of political systems and how societies are organised and led. You’ll study how parliaments, presidents, and prime ministers make decisions, and how those choices shape communities and influence daily life. Through real-world case studies, you’ll analyse systems of government, compare political ideologies, and debate the effectiveness of different leadership styles. By the end of this module, you’ll understand how power operates and how individuals can play a part in driving political and social change.

Module 2: International Relations
Step into the world of diplomacy and global affairs as you learn how nations cooperate, where conflicts arise, and why collaboration is key to addressing shared challenges. You’ll explore topics such as climate change, security, and migration, while examining the role of international organisations like the United Nations and NATO. Through interactive activities — including treaty analysis and negotiation simulations — you’ll develop the skills to think critically and act strategically in complex global contexts.

Module 3: Leadership in Practice
Translate leadership theory into action through hands-on, scenario-based learning. You’ll take part in group challenges, debates, and public speaking exercises designed to build your confidence, communication, and decision-making abilities. This module encourages you to reflect on your personal leadership style and strengths, helping you lead with empathy, purpose, and the ability to unite others around a shared vision.
